Well, today we
should write about a free topic. Today I’m going to teach about “El arte de
amar” by Erich Fromm, in my class with the workers of the university. I shall
take this opportunity to review the lesson.
In his famous
work “El arte de Amar” Fromm presents love as a skill that can be taught and
developed. He rejects the idea of loving as something magical and mysterious
that cannot be analyzed and explained, and is therefore skeptical about popular
ideas such as "falling in love" or being helpless in the face of love. Because modern
humans are alienated from each other and from nature, we seek refuge from our
aloneness in romantic love and marriage. However, Fromm observes that real love
"is not a sentiment which can be easily indulged in by anyone." In
this argument the author sentence that the human’s not understand the love as
an activity, or the power of the soul. On the contrary, the people think that of
more important is to find a proper object.
In the next
class, we’re going to review the third chapter of the book, the different ways
of loving: a) brotherly love, b) Maternal love, c) Erotic love, d) self-love,
e) Loving God. I hope that this class allows us to reflect on this paradox and
initiate a productive dialogue about our way of relating. Well, and obviously I
also hope that this content permits them to respond well their philosophy test.
